Alastair has been based in Southeast Asia since 1999 and is one of the region's best-known arbitration names, with deep knowledge of the countries of the region.

He handles arbitrations across a wide variety of trade, commercial and financial activities. In addition to high-value commercial and investment disputes, he has particular expertise in major infrastructure and construction projects; oil, gas and power; and shareholder, JV and M&A disputes. Dr. Gerold Herrmann was President of ICCA from 2002 until 2010. Until his retirement in 2001 he worked for 26 years for UNCITRAL (United Nations Commission on International Trade Law), the last ten years thereof as its Director. His major achievement was the elaboration and promulgation of the UNCITRAL Model Law and the concomitant assistance in establishing or internationalising arbitration centres all over the world. Dr. Herrmann is Honorary Professor of Vienna University, Honorary Vice President of the LCIA Court and former President of the LCIA Court. In 2001 INSOL International presented to him the Scroll of Honour and the International Insolvency Institute honoured him in 2006 with the Outstanding Contributions Award.
